People love the great beauty, natural landscapes, and outdoor adventures of Cape Fear. It’s an amazing, unique, and diverse place where pride is powerful and most folks spend more time outdoors than in. Fishing, camping, hiking and hunting are treasured outdoor traditions, and while it’s hard to imagine anything different, change seems to be inevitable and always on the horizon.
This collection offers windows to a different time on the coastal plain and memories of people who experienced that time. It stands to preserve the links and spirit of the past while probing the very nature of change in our wildlife heritage.
Many of the stories describe what it was like not too long ago and what it may be like in the future. This collection presents stories from the Cape Fear valley, highlighting its evolving landscape, notable figures, and connection to its wonderful people.

About the Author

Born in Wilmington, Robert Rehder spent his younger years at Wrightsville Beach at the family cottage on Shearwater Street. Hunting, fishing, and camping along the coast with his father, uncles, and brothers shaped his life-long outdoor perspective.
From Wrightsville, he explored the wild inlets, marshes, creeks and beaches from Corncake Inlet to New River at a time when great schools of gamefish moved along the coast and massive migrations of waterfowl gathered in the marshes.
He graduated from New Hanover High School, graduated with a BA from UNC – Wilmington and an MBA with a concentration in maritime economics from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he worked for William H. Swan & Sons, Inc., an international marine and industrial supplier for 22 years, and then the state of North Carolina for 12 years as a business consultant for veterans before starting his own consulting business.
He writes from his home in Wilmington and has published two books and over fifty short stories, articles, and essays in regional magazines and newspapers. A life-long wing shooter and light tackle fisherman, his stories embrace the outdoors with a spirit of adventure and exploration.
He and his wife, Amaryallis, have four children and nine grandchildren. They are supporters of the National Wild Turkey Federation where both have a registered Grand Slam of wild turkeys.
