The author has used her research skills and knowledge of Clarkton, North Carolina to write the story of John J Newell. She takes us from his mother to his death. As you read throughout the book you will learn what he was able to achieve during and after American Slavery. His political work is well-documented in numerous North Carolina newspapers and others as distance as New York. He encouraged his descendants to be well-educated. Their successful careers included education, medicine, religion, professional sports, politics, banking, law enforcement, and government.

Nadine Shipman
Edna “Nadine” Shipman is the daughter of Daniel Lency Shipman Jr & Inez Swindell Shipman. John J Newell & Mary Maria Newell are her great-great grandparents. She grew up in Clarkton, North Carolina and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Following high school, she attended North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina and earned a Batchelor of Arts degree in History and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling.
After a career in public education, Nadine retired and pursued a different interest. First, she learned to quilt as a hobby. Later, she met some genealogists. After attending several Genealogy Drop - In sessions at the local library, she considered writing a book about the life of John J Newell and his descendants.
Khalil Parker inquired about the purpose of the book. He is an eleven-year-old descendant. As he grows, he can learn and understand the life of his ancestors.
Nadine Shipman lives in Wilmington, NC. She is a Silver Star and Lifetime Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In November 2022, she was inducted into the Golden Eagle Society of North Carolina Central University.
